Primary Responsibilities:
- Authorized Screening of Persons & Goods by The Marine Transportation Security Act:
• To prevent weapons, explosive substances or incendiary devices from being introduced into a restricted area.
- To identify & ensure that all persons & goods are subjected to search before allowing them into a restricted area.
- To search each passenger & their carry on baggage before allowing them to enter a restricted area.
- To ensure that each search of a passenger & carry-on baggage is conducted using hand search of passengers, hand search of baggage, hand held metal detector search, X-ray examination, & walk-through detector search whenever necessary.
- Interpret & distinguish images on X-ray screen.
- Proper operation of X-ray display “special function” keys.
- Evaluates each bag in the chamber to decide if it should be sent for a physical bag search, require emergency procedure or can pass to the passenger.
- Control flow of passengers through metal detector.
- Directs passengers to secondary search if necessary.
- Resolves alarm as soon as it sounds, while continuing screening.
- Responds and follows appropriate procedure for alarms & difficult situations.
- Checks the weight & balance of the baggage.
- Complete appropriate paper work, logs, specific forms, accurately & in a timely fashion.
- Properly reports related incidents to the Manager immediately.
- Speak with passengers & coworkers in English or French depending on the passenger preference.
- Deal calmly with difficult passengers and request support from Supervisor & Duty Manager.
Physical & Mental Requirements:
- With or without reasonable accommodation, the physical and mental requirements of this job may include the following: seeing, hearing, speaking, and writing clearly. Reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Standing and may be required for long periods of time. Additional physical requirements may include, frequent lifting and/or moving up to ten (10) Kilograms and occasional lifting and/or moving up to twenty-five (25) Kilograms.
- Must be able to meet and continue to meet any applicable Provincial and municipal licensing requirements for Screeners.
- Must be available to work on all shifts: days, evenings and nights which may include rotational shifts.
- Must have the ability to use a computer and operating controls along with client security software applications.
- Must be fluent in English and/or French..
